Brief Description


The base location for this role is Bristol however there is flexibility of work location along the Western Route.

Western route stretches from London Paddington to Penzance, through Bristol and up to the boundaries with Wales, the Cotswolds and Hampshire. We operate, maintain and are renewing more than 2,000 miles of railway, including the historic Great Western Main Line, conceived by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, for which the Western Route Director is responsible for. There are over 200 stations on the route, and we manage London Paddington, Reading and Bristol Temple Meads stations.

This is an exciting opportunity to support the new Western Route Director, and become a critical member of the leadership team. Your days will be busy and varied, providing an efficient and effective support service to the Western Route Director, and we would expect a professional yet flexible attitude. You will work with the team, managing complex relationships and demonstrate confidence in your role, with a proven ability to work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

On behalf of the Route Director, you will manage and drive actions, be involved in helping to deliver the route’s strategic priorities, support our safety culture improvement programme, lead on key activities with stakeholders, and play an important role at times of service disruption.

You will also act as a key contact for the Western Route for the Chief Executive’s Office and Regional Managing Director’s office for governance and reporting matters. Please note that a proportion of the role will be overseeing and coordinating presentation and reporting materials for the Regional Managing Director, Chief Executive’s and the Network Rail Board.

Previous experience of working at executive level will be helpful but not essential. The role provides an excellent opportunity to gain an understanding of our business, exposure to senior leadership and influence decision making. A high degree of flexibility is essential for this role. Some travel will be required and this is estimated to be around 6 days per month.


About the role (External)


Key Accountabilities

1. Provide strategic and tactical advice to the managing director, region on business objectives

2. Responsible for the provision of timely, papers, presentations, reports and documents including accurate analytical information and prepare briefing material to enable effective decision making and drive business performance improvement.

3. Lead and manage arrangements for functions, conferences, visits and meetings for both internal and external stakeholders.

4. Attend and support the managing director, region at engagement sessions with senior internal and external stakeholders.

5. Manage regional managing director and team actions so that these are progressed and closed out effectively.

6. Lead and prepare documentation for key internal business reviews where the managing director, region and direct reports are present.

7. Build and maintain strong relationships with senior stakeholders across the business providing insightful and timely information which is validated, analysed and reported accurately and effectively to the regional managing director.

8. Identify, champion and sponsor the development and delivery of specific projects and manage the implementation of these projects amongst the regional leadership team.

9. Lead cross-functional teams to identify best practice and improve passenger and customer service.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

• Qualified to degree level or equivalent relevant experience

• Previous successful experience of working with and facilitating multi-functional groups

• Proven ability to influence and negotiate at all levels

• Able to demonstrate effective leadership, interpersonal and communications skills

• Proven ability to influence decision making and build cross functional / cross company relationships

• Detailed understanding of the railway industry, its key business processes and interfaces

• Commercially astute, persuasive and customer focussed

• Able to demonstrate high written, oral communications, numeracy and analytical skills

Desirable

• Sound knowledge of railway geography, stakeholders and priorities


Salary:
£68,099 - £76,612.

The interview will be a 2 stage interview. The first interview will be an interview based on your motivation, competence and require a presentation. If successful for the second round, you will interview with the new Western Route Director and the Head of Human Resources for Western Route.
