Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated senior doctor in training (above ST4 or equivalent) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital as a chief registrar.

The chief registrar role provides senior trainees with 40-50% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement. Learning that chief registrars gain from the Royal College of Physicians’ (RCP’s) bespoke development programme will be put into practice in a supported environment that provides autonomy, flexibility and support to develop and support projects that address key local challenges and priorities. This may include service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce, and sustainability.

The chief registrar role will suit trainees who:
  • Want to learn about leadership and gain senior leadership experience
  • Are comfortable working in uncertain environments and across traditional boundaries
  • Relish the opportunity to develop their own ideas and initiatives
  • Are committed to and passionate about improving the NHS.
The chief registrar will be mentored by a senior clinical leader within the organisation and gain a unique insight into NHS leadership and management processes, as well as deeper knowledge of NHS structures and stakeholders.

The chief registrar will be expected to attend modules delivered as part of the RCP’s bespoke development programme, which will cover, for example, change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing and personal resilience.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has one of the busiest Medical takes in the UK(numerically the 5thlargest medical take in England). The Acute Medicine department assesses and treats approximately 25,000 patients every year. T

The Trust is developing strategies to ensure rapid assessment and treatment of all emergency cases with close working between the acute physicians and other specialties.

Short Stay- an increased number of short-stay beds are planned together with a Clinical Decision-making Unit of 40 beds. The current short stay service run by Acute Medicine serves between 8000 and 9000 patients per year.

Ambulatory Care– The Acute Medicine Clinic opened in August 2013 and this area has been recently moved to allow admissions from both the emergency department and from GPs and is a consultant-delivered service. There is a 30 patient seated waiting room and 9 trolleyed cubicles for assessment of patients. There is a dedicated open plan work area for the team to complete paperwork and a quiet room for discussing with patients/relatives. The ambulatory care area currently runs 0800-2000, 5 days per week in a dedicated area of the AMU and 0800 to 1700 Saturday/Sunday. Our latest figures show we are seeing 120 patients per week, more than 20% of the admissions and has shown a reduction in admissions. Our medical team work with dedicated Advanced Care Practitioners (ACPs).

The chief registrar will be expected to attend modules delivered as part of the RCP’s bespoke development programme, which will cover, for example, change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing and personal resilience.

  • National Training Number (NTN) ST4 level or above
  • Locally Employed Doctors (LED) at equivalent experience of ST4 or above
  • Working full time or less-than-full-time
  • Who have full GMC registration.
This is a fixed-term role for minimum of 12 months. For those with an NTN, the role can be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training or experience) and must be discussed with your educational supervisor and training programme director (TPD), and permission to apply must be granted by the TPD.
