Job Purpose
The Glasgow University Software Service (GUSS) is a facility within the School of Computing Science that provides software development capability for customers across the University and real-world software development experience to students working within the GUSS as software development interns. A core management team undertake a variety of tasks to ensure GUSS operates efficiently, including student recruitment, financial administration, marketing and project supervision.
The Software Supervisor role is a developmental part time role to provide additional project supervision alongside the core GUSS management team, reporting into the GUSS Director. Software supervisors are responsible for ensuring the delivery of GUSS software development projects within agreed timescales and budgets. It is anticipated that Software Supervisors will work for GUSS supervising 2-6 students on 1-2 projects for approximately 5 hours per week.
It is anticipated that this role will help individuals gain project management experience which can be used to further progress their careers.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Apply specialist software engineering experience to provide feedback to customers and the GUSS Director on proposed project feasibility based on outline requirements and available budgets.
2. Support the GUSS Director and management team in the selection of suitable GUSS software developers to undertake the project.
3. Decide on suitable software architecture for project solution, based on specialist technical experience.
4. Undertake analysis, refinement and elaboration of project requirements in consultation with customers.
5. Plan and prioritise the project roadmap to ensure delivery within the agreed overall person budget.
6. Decide on appropriate work-effort schedules and team sizes for projects within the available person-hour budget.
7. Allocate tasks to software development team members and monitor their progress on delivery.
8. Review and approve work undertaken by software development team members on the project.
9. Schedule and lead initial and regular progress meetings with customers and development teams on agreed projects.
10. Review project progress against roadmap on a regular basis and agree adjustments with customers for adjustments, based on relevant software development experience.
11. Provide advice to the GUSS Director and management team on enhancements to service-wide software development processes.
12. Provide technical advice and expertise to software development team members.
13. Identify and report on opportunities to initiate follow on projects between the service and the customer.
14. Foster a collaborative culture and working practices within the software project team.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
A2 Practical knowledge of modern software engineering practices particularly in the areas of change management, quality assurance, continuous integration and software process improvement.
Desirable:
B1 A first degree in a Computing Science or a cognate discipline, or equivalent

C1 Ability to work flexibly and independently, assess and adapt to changing priorities, and manage own workload effectively.
C2 Strong problem solving and creative thinking skills
C3 Excellent organisational skills to deal with a busy role with competing demands.
C4 Ability to liaise and cooperate with people across organisational boundaries.
C5 Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and highly developed and proven interpersonal, negotiation and diplomatic skills.

D2 Skills for coaching and mentoring of junior colleagues, interns or students in software development roles.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role
E2 Minimum 18 months of software industry experience in a graduate software development role or similar.
E3 Experience of delivering high quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner
E4 Experience of creating, adapting and modifying processes to fit a projects context and implementing change.
E5 Prior experience of interpreting requirements, providing high quality advice and guidance service delivery matters.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £31,502 - £35,308 per annum pro rata.
This post is part time (5 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 6 months.
